Proverbs 4:20 – 27

20My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

My son has been involved in weight lifting for a number of years. He used to workout regularly five days a week. One day he would workout his legs, the next day his arms, the next day his back and shoulder muscles. Everyday he would work on a different muscle group.

But one day I noticed that he changed his routine. He was working out only every other day. I wondered if he was starting to slack off a bit. But he told me that his schedule changed with his job and it forced him to change his workout schedule. He told me that he switched to a “full body” workout routine.

A “full body” workout is an exercise session designed to train all the major muscle groups in one workout, rather than splitting them across different days. The advantages are:

  • Better strength gains
  • Higher calorie burn
  • Faster fat loss
  • Better hormone and metabolic balance

So the “full body” workout, as the name implies, involves the entire body, and improves many aspects of health in a single workout.

Wisdom, in a similar sense, is the “full body” workout for life. The passage from Proverbs 4 demonstrates that wisdom involves what we hear, see, say, think and walk (how we conduct ourselves) — the “full body” of our lives. All of this is guided by what’s in our hearts — our inner core, the seat of all our will, thoughts and emotions.

Notice verse 21 says to “keep them [God’s Words/Wisdom] within your heart“. In others words — to heed, guard, treasure, and obey. Keeping His Words will allow you to be “kept” — to rest under the vigilant care of the covenant God.

So if you want a healthy “full body” life, start each day off with a “full body” workout of God’s Word (Wisdom) — “For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.”
