Proverbs 20:27

“The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.”

Proverbs 28:13

“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

When I was a “Little Vic“ (meaning when I was a child), I remember going to my grandparents’ house for the summers. For a kid from the city, everyday seemed like a “day of discovery” on the 40 acre farm in rural Mississippi.

One day I was washing my hands in the bathroom and noticed a long plastic blue box on the bathroom vanity. It had seven sections with little lids on each section. A couple of lids were open exposing empty compartments. But the others had something hidden inside them.

Curious, I took the blue box to my grandmother and asked, “Grandma, what is this?”

She smiled and said, “Well Victor, that’s my pill box. I keep my medicine in it.”

“But why does it have all these parts?”, I asked.

She replied, “It helps me take the right medicine on the right day. There is a section for every day of the week.”

Even more curious, I asked, “Oh, okay. Can I open the other parts to see what’s inside?”

She then looked at me in a way I knew I had better pay attention. She said sternly, “No, you better not. All my medicine could fall out on the floor.”

Naturally, not wanting to incur the “wrath of Mamie Burch”, I quickly returned the pill box back to the bathroom and closed all the lids.

Our lives are like the compartments of the blue pill box. We have a work life, a married life, a social life, an Internet life, an emotional life, a spiritual life — compartments that the world sees.

We strive to make each compartment look as good as possible in front of others. At church we want to look like a “super saint”. At work we want others to see us as the “employee of the month”. Socially, we want others to think that we “got it all together”. We want everyone to see our “blue pill boxes” with closed lids never exposing what is really inside. In the back of our minds, we even think we can hide things from God.

But Proverbs 20:27 tells us that our inner spirit is like a lamp to God — He sees everything, all the time, completely exposed. No matter how tightly we close the lid, God knows what’s really inside us — the good, the bad and the ugly.

Sometimes we “open up” a compartment or two to try to give God the impression that we are ready to address the sin in our lives. We’ll say something like, “Yes Lord, I have been late to church lately and I did get sleepy during the sermon last week. I’m sorry. I will do better.”

But we will keep the lid closed on other compartments. These compartments hide things like:

Unforgiveness that is turning into bitterness

Treating God as if He’s a genie, just there to give us what we want when we want it

Manipulating people and situations with deceit

Assassinating someone’s reputation and character

Putting other things and people ahead of God, making Him a distant 2nd in our lives

And the list goes on.

Proverbs 28:13 tells us the outcome of hiding our sins before an all knowing God — we will not prosper.

Confess all your known sins before the Lord. Then allow the Holy Spirit to reveal areas that you thought were okay, but actually need adjustment — your attitudes towards others, your thought life, your temper, your self-control, your degree of pride, selfishness, truthfulness, etc. The Lord is ready and longing to be merciful to you. You just need to have a heart that longs for Him. (Isaiah 30:18)

For with the Lord, there is no day of discovery about you; your “blue pill box” is wide open.

Instead, each day is an opportunity for you to discover the grace and mercy for your sins, and receive help for your weaknesses (Hebrews 4:14 – 16). Let each day be a day of discovery for you to come to know more of His sovereignty, power, faithfulness, righteousness and grace.

Today make it a priority to discover the One Who knows you best, and died and rose to reconcile you with the One Who loves you the most. (2 Corinthians 5:16 – 21)
