Proverbs 24:11 – 12

Rescue those who are being taken away to death, And those who stagger to the slaughter, Oh hold them back [from their doom]!

If you [claim ignorance and] say, “See, we did not know this,” Does He not consider it who weighs and examines the hearts and their motives? And does He not know it who guards your life and keeps your soul? And will He not repay [you and] every man according to his works? (AMP)

It is common to read stories about people addicted to drugs or alcohol. We may even know someone with those problems. But rarely do we read about one of our most common addictions…our addiction to comfort.

Our addiction to comfort leads us to avoid anything that is considered an inconvenience. And unfortunately that includes helping others. If we just take a “non-self-centered” moment, there are people all around us who need help.

  • People are struggling in their faith
  • Marriages are falling apart
  • Kids are getting into trouble
  • Love within families is eroding
  • Integrity can’t be found at the workplace
  • A struggling business owner needs help
  • Someone just received “unwelcomed” news from a doctor

Our addiction to comfort shuts our eyes and ears to the needs of others. And while we build our house of contentment, life falls apart for others around us…when we have the means to help. (Proverbs 3:27-28, James 4:17)

But God instructs us not to turn our backs on others…not to pretend we don’t know about these things, which are all around us. His piercing eyes see what’s “hidden” in our hearts. We can’t hide, deceive or pretend before Him. If we try, there will be consequences.

But by the same token if we share the love of God through our actions of helping others, there are benefits, in this world and the next. His piercing eyes can see the deep unspoken desires of our hearts and fulfill them in a way which reveals another aspect of His glorious nature.

Don’t let an addiction to comfort keep you from the “Great Reveal” of His nature.
