Proverbs 2:1 – 8

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding; furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up success for the upright; He is a shield for those who live with integrity so that he may guard the paths of justice and protect the way of his faithful followers. (CSB)

If you take a look at the first part of this passage, you will notice several verbs (action words) in these verses:

  • Accept
  • Store
  • Listen
  • Direct
  • Call out
  • Lift your voice
  • Seek

Respecting God, obtaining wisdom and experiencing the associated benefits require an active pursuit of God, not a passive or casual acceptance. We have to have Him on our minds and be intentional in our relationship with Him and making Him a prominent part of our lives. Just like Jesus was “about His Father’s business”, we need to do the same, with the first order of business being actively seeking Him.
