Proverbs 6:16 – 19

16 These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him:

17 A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil,

19 A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren.

One of our natural tendencies is to look at others and see their flaws. This is especially true with the church…and with good reason. Our society has changed in a number ways over the past few decades with devastating results for our society as a whole, and especially our children.

  • Today’s television commercials contain content that used to be in “R” rated movies.
  • Traditional “intact” families used to be the norm and now they are the exception.
  • Truth used to be objective and verifiable; now its considered relative.
  • A growing number of school age children lack respect for any type of authority figure.
  • Divorce used to be uncommon; now its the norm and even expected by many of our young adults.

Things that would have shocked us a generation ago now seem to be normal. We (the church) have grown accustomed to the “normal” of the culture. Unfortunately, this leads us away from fellowship with God. We are supposed to impact the culture for Christ, not be subtlety pushed away from Him by the culture.

When you think about Proverbs 6:16 – 19, the Lord doesn’t point out problems of society, but issues with our individual behavior…issues of the heart.

Have you determined to remain strong in Christ and take a stand against the wayward tendencies of our society, or have you grown accustomed to the things God hates?

Take a minute to take a look at the GPS of your own life and the issues of your heart.
