Proverbs 3:27

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. (NIV)

James 4:17

So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin. (AMP)

Selfishness comes natural for us. Even the cutest little baby has to be taught how not to be selfish, to share, to be aware and considerate of others around him/her. How well we learn that lesson as a child affects how we interact with others as we grow (Remember the phrase “spoiled brat”?).

Our society in many ways reinforces our selfish tendency where we look at every thing and situation from the standpoint of “What’s in it for me?”, where we constantly think and repeat the words of almost every 2 year old, “Mine, mine, mine!”

But the Bible teaches a concept contrary to our society and our (sinful) nature. It teaches generosity (Proverbs 11:25, 22:9). It teaches righteousness, i.e., doing what is fair, just, and what is right (naturally, morally and legally). To not do what is right, goes contrary to the commandments, principles, and character of God. That by definition is sin.

So what good thing (or actions or words or attitude) are you withholding from your neighbor (Matthew 22:38 – 40, Leviticus 19:18)? What are you holding on to with the tight grip of a 2 year old saying, “Mine, mine, mine!”
