Proverbs 10:5

He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.

Farming is built around seasons or timing. If a farmer doesn’t prepare the soil in time to plant his crops, then he will be delayed in planting. If he delays planting, the crops won’t get a chance to mature and the yield at harvest time will be low.

If he doesn’t gather his crops during harvest time, they will rot in the field and he won’t have enough food to last him through the winter into the next spring.

If he doesn’t do a necessary activity at the proper time, it will adversely affect him at a later time.

So it is with life. What we do now affects us in the future. Sometimes we have a “season” or time period to take care of necessary activities. But if we are lazy (or get distracted), we will miss the opportunity and have to “suffer the consequences” later.

Solomon is saying in effect, “Take care of business when you need to take care of business. Don’t let laziness distract you from what you need to do now.”

Do you need to be “taking care of business”? Are you distracted by the comfort of laziness? If so, wake up! Don’t let your harvest spoil in the fields.
